Your Home Fragrance Isn't Fading. It Was Sold to You That Way.

Your machine still works. The smell still disappears by week three. The reason is in the bottle, and once you see it you can't unsee it.

The entrance hall of a warm, quiet home at dusk

Think about the last time you refilled your diffuser. The first two days were great. You walked in the door and the house smelled like something on purpose. You even noticed it in the hallway.

By week two you had to stand close to catch it. By week three you turned the machine up. And a few days after that, the bottle was empty and your card was charged again.

If that is your cycle, you have probably decided one of two things. Either your nose got used to it, or you need a bigger machine.

It is neither. And the real answer is going to annoy you.

Everyone blames the machine. Almost nobody reads the bottle.

Home fragrance oil is not one thing. It is a spectrum. At one end is neat fragrance oil, with nothing in the bottle but the fragrance itself. At the other end is fragrance mixed with a carrier — water, alcohol, a cheap dilutant. Sometimes the fragrance is a small part of what you are holding.

Go get your refill and read the back of it right now. If it lists water or alcohol before it lists anything else, you already have your answer.

Because here is what diluted oil does to your house.

  1. It smells weak on day one. So you set the machine higher than you should, just to notice it.
  2. A higher setting burns through the bottle. You are now spraying mostly carrier at full output.
  3. The bottle is small to begin with. Many refills are sized for about a month. That is not an accident.
  4. So you reorder. Every month. Forever.

You were never really buying fragrance. You were buying a delivery schedule.

The part that stops being about smell

Look at what a good-smelling home actually costs you in a year. Not the machine. The refills.

The way most of us end up paying for scent

CandlesBeautiful for an evening, gone by morning. Scent reaches about an arm's length, and you never fully relax with a flame in another room.every few weeks
Plug-insSharp and synthetic in a closed room. You stop noticing them in days and guests never do.every few weeks
ReedsWeek one is lovely. Week two they are furniture.every couple months
Pod refillsSmall, sealed, priced per month, and you cannot see how much is fragrance and how much is filler.every month
Refill plansThe charge arrives whether the house smells good that month or not. Skipping is usually capped. Leaving usually has a term attached.every month

That last line is the one worth sitting with. A refill plan is not a bad deal because it costs money. It is a bad deal because the money keeps moving whether the product is working or not. The scent went flat in week three. The charge did not.

Somewhere along the way, home fragrance stopped being something you buy and became something you are enrolled in.

There is a different way to do this

Make the oil strong enough that a small amount is plenty. Put a lot of it in the bottle. Sell the bottle.

That is the whole idea. It is not clever. It is just the version nobody builds, because a bottle that lasts two months is a bottle you buy six times less often.

That is what we make.

A calm, expensively quiet living room in the late afternoon

What is actually in the bottle

Undiluted fine fragrance oil. No water, no alcohol, no fillers. One hundred millilitres.

It is built for two-fluid atomization, which is the dry method. The oil is pushed into the air as a dry micro-mist instead of being carried on wet fog. Nothing lands on your furniture, and nothing has to be watered down to travel.

Because it is neat oil, you run the machine on a low setting and still smell it from the next room. Because you run it low, and because there is 100 ml in there, a bottle lasts two to three months on a schedule. Run it flat out all day and you will get three to four weeks.

One bottle is $67. That is $22 to $33 a month for a house that smells like somewhere. And when the bottle is done, nothing happens. No charge. No email. You buy another one when you want another one.

Six bottles. Six places.

We did not build a fragrance library. We built six, and each one is a specific place at a specific time of day.

Paris, Cedar and Clove ParisCedar & Clove — a leather armchair near a lit fireplace. Evening.
Barcelona, White Tea BarcelonaWhite Tea — fresh hotel linen with the window open. Morning.
Grasse, Rose and Jasmine GrasseRose & Jasmine — the first minute inside a flower shop. Evening.
Monaco, Sea Salt and Sage MonacoSea Salt & Sage — a yacht deck after rain. Morning.
Vienna, Spruce and Lavender ViennaSpruce & Lavender — an alpine spa in December. Night.
Amalfi, Pear and Orange AmalfiPear & Orange — limoncello weather on a terrace. Daytime.

Most people start with two: Barcelona for the daytime and the guest bathroom, and either Paris or Vienna for the evening. Two bottles takes 10% off. Three or more takes 15%, and it comes off at checkout on its own.

A few things you are probably wondering

$67 is more than I pay now

Per bottle, yes. Per month, usually not. On a schedule a bottle runs two to three months, so you are at $22 to $33 a month, and you choose when the next one happens. The number that matters is not the price on the bottle. It is the number of times a year the price happens.

Is this a subscription?

Only if you want it to be. Pay once is the default — you add bottles to a cart, you pay, and nothing renews. Our own policy says it plainly: AURESSEN does not require a subscription, and a Pay Once order has nothing to cancel. There is also a Subscribe & Save option at 15% off if you would rather a bottle arrived every month. It has no minimum number of deliveries and no cancellation fee, and you can stop it yourself from your account whenever you like. Worth knowing before you pick: on a daily schedule a bottle lasts two to three months, so a monthly delivery will send you more oil than most homes get through.

Will it work in the machine I already have?

Only if it is an AURESSEN machine. We would rather tell you that here than at checkout. This is neat oil made for two-fluid atomization, so it is not meant for a pod system, a capsule system, or a water-tank ultrasonic diffuser. If you are on a pod or capsule plan right now, this is a change of system, not a change of refill. Our machines start at $100 for a single room, and there is a plan that ends by itself if you would rather pay monthly.

Will it actually be strong enough?

That is usually the opposite of the problem. Undiluted oil in a dry atomizer is strong on a low setting, and the fix for a room that is too much is to turn the schedule down, not to buy a bigger machine. It is worth setting yours lower than you think for the first few days.

What if I open it and hate it?

Send it back within 30 days. Opened is fine — that is the entire point of the guarantee. We email you the label and you get the full amount back. Scent is personal, and you cannot know from a description.

What it is like when it is right

It is a Thursday in October. You have people coming at seven and you have not lit anything, sprayed anything, or opened a window.

The first person through the door stops in your entryway, does the small pause everyone does, and says the thing. What is that?

And the honest answer is that you bought a bottle in August, it is still going, and nothing is going to charge you for the privilege of your house smelling like this.

A home should smell like somewhere. It should not come with a plan.

Your machine was probably never the problem. Look at the bottle next to it, and look at how often you have replaced it this year. If the answer is more than four times, you are not buying fragrance.

You are renting it.
